One seriously ill child is one too many. Parents of ill children are faced with heart wrenching decisions and will often do anything in their power to care for their children at home. This can put an impossible strain on families. Parents are often in emotional turmoil, relationships can flounder, siblings can feel neglected, careers are often cut short and holidays are rare. This is where we at Kinderhospice Binnenveld in Barneveld can help.

We provide a comfortable home-like environment for children up to the age of 18 with life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses. The children are welcome to stay for longer or shorter periods, giving their families a much-needed rest, secure in the knowledge that their children are in loving, professional hands.

Kinderhospice Binnenveld is one of seven children’s hospices in the Netherlands specialised in providing complex medical care, pain management and emotional support to seriously ill children. We have an accumulated wealth of knowledge on high quality respite and palliative care and are supported by an experienced team of doctors and nursing staff. We are grateful for the invaluable assistance we receive from our dedicated team of enthusiastic volunteers without whom we would not be able to provide the level of care we do. We maintain close contact with medical specialists in hospitals who remain the prime care professionals for individual patients.

Hospitals tend to focus on cures. We care for those for whom a cure is unlikely. We believe that children should be encouraged to enjoy life to the full, to make the most of it, whatever the circumstances. Ill children, like healthy children, enjoy reading, drawing, learning, playing, music and movement. We encourage parents to stay with their child and to enjoy doing the fun things so many others take for granted. We focus on what they can do, not on what they can’t.

Kinderhospice Binnenveld can provide 24-hour care to 12 children, about 70 to 80 annually. The building is light and airy, warm and inviting, and resembles a storybook Dutch farmhouse. It is equipped with the most modern apparatus and technical know-how. There is even a multi-sensory ‘snoezel’ room designed to stimulate all five senses, with coloured lights and gentle sounds.

All this, of course, comes at a price. Treatment and care are expensive. The complex care of seriously ill children is (usually) covered by Dutch health insurance (AWBZ). However, children who require less complex, but equally time consuming care, often fall outside this policy. This places a heavy financial burden on the hospice and parents.  In order to cover some of these costs, and to be able to continue to provide the care these children so desperately need, we are dependent on the generosity of companies, individuals and communities.
